The cold winter chill has arrived. Just as we hurriedly run from our cars to the indoors to avoid the stinging cold, animals and critters too are looking for lodging and somewhere they can escape the cold. Unfortunately for some of us, that location is in our homes. If you’re dealing with or worried about pests in your home this winter, follow these steps to help keep them out.
Look for Access Locations
While you didn’t hand these unwanted guests a personal invite to come into your home, chances are they arrived through an opening somewhere that you missed or neglected to patch up. Most critters can squeeze through small spaces, so overlooking small holes is never a good idea. If you’re worried about animals getting in it’s a good idea to take a walk around your home and plug up any holes or cracks in windows, doors, foundation or siding to eliminate entry methods.
Be a Neat Freak
Being overly clean and organized is critical if you’re worried about pests or have seen unwanted visitors in or around your home. Locations that have a good place for them to hide or get cozy in (like pies of junk, sitting branches and leaves, or other clutter) make it a no-brainier for them to choose your location. Sweep, dust and mop your floors regularly and be sure the trash is taken out and that there’s nothing for critters to come feast on in your home to attract them there.
Professional Help
Sometimes you can be the most organized person in the world and do regular maintenance to prevent the issue of unwanted critters in your home, and they’ll still show up. Other times you’ll be dealing with something larger than a critter – like bats – that you want removed safely and quickly. In these instances, it’s best to get a professional to come out and help you. They’ll be able to remove the wildlife from your home safely, help you repair any damage that might have been done, and even close off those areas that brought the pests in.
