Skunks roam through neighborhoods all over Connecticut and often come into contact with pets that are out in yards. A skunk can spray if it feels threatened by an animal that gets too close. If your dog or cat gets sprayed by a skunk, there is a simple solution you can make at home to get rid of the smell.
HOMEMADE SOLUTION TO GET RID OF SKUNK ODOR
Tomato juice does not get rid of skunk smell; it merely masks it. To get rid of the odor, combine 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, which you can get at a pharmacy; ¼ cup baking soda; and 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap.
Do not make this mixture ahead of time to have on hand in case your pet ever gets sprayed by a skunk. The solution is unstable and can explode if it is left in a bottle. Only make it when you need it.
Keep your pet outside while you are preparing the solution. This can prevent the smell from spreading throughout your house.
HOW TO REMOVE SKUNK ODOR FROM YOUR PET
Check your pet’s eyes. If they are red or irritated, flush them immediately using cool water.
Put on rubber gloves and wash your pet with the solution as soon as possible after it has been sprayed. Be careful not to get the solution in your pet’s eyes or mouth. Rub the mixture through your pet’s fur and then rinse thoroughly. Don’t leave it on for too long because it can bleach your pet’s fur.
After you have rinsed the solution out of your pet’s fur, follow it up with pet shampoo. Rinse your pet again and dry its fur with a towel. Then put your pet in a warm room until it is completely dry.
HOW TO GET SKUNK ODOR OUT OF YOUR CLOTHES
While you are cleaning your pet, you may get some of the skunk odor on your clothes. You can get rid of the smell by washing your clothes with laundry detergent and ½ cup of baking soda.
