What to Look for When Cleaning Your House
When you are cleaning out your attic this spring, look around for wild animal nests. Squirrels often choose to seek shelter in attics and get in by chewing and clawing through wood and insulation.
After you clean your windows, birds may not realize they are there and may fly into them. You can prevent this by hanging something inside or dangling Mylar tape outside so that birds will know something is there and won’t fly into the windows.
Wild animals often seek out shelter in chimneys and vents. These are warm and secluded places to build nests and raise their babies. If you are cleaning your chimney or vents and find a family of wild animals, it is best to let them stay until the babies are able to leave and live independently. If you find baby animals living in your chimney, wait until they have left and have the chimney capped.
Animals can squeeze through small gaps, even ones ½ inch across. If you find a gap in your siding, plug it loosely with paper, cloth, or insulation and make sure there are no animals living in there before you seal the gap.
Check for Wild Animals When Working in Your Yard
Before you mow your lawn, check for nests in the ground. Rabbits may make nests right in the middle of your lawn. Take a quick walk around your yard before you mow to see if there are any signs of animal nests.
When trimming trees, first make sure there are no nests in the branches. Birds and squirrels may have created nests, and they could be filled with babies. You can keep your tree limbs trimmed throughout the year to discourage animals from building nests.
