Skunks aren’t exactly the first animal you think of when you think cute & cuddly. In fact, most of us would probably take off running in the opposite direction if we spotted one of these creatures coming our way.
Depictions of their tails lifting and squirting everything in their path with an offensive odor isn’t the only thing to think about when it comes to skunks. 1. You cannot relocate a Skunk yourself.
In Connecticut, DEEP regulations state that skunks are part of the rabies-vector species and as such, cannot be trapped and move off property unless they are causing a nuisance. Hiring a professional for skunk removal to handle the relocation is key.
2. They have a strong aim.
While a skunk will offer warnings before it sprays (such as scratching its feet, hissing and raising its tail) once it does spray, you’ll need to be decently far away to keep away from the pungent fluid. Their aim is strong and can reach victims up to even 10 feet in distance.
3. They can’t see very well.
Even with a really strong aim like this, the truth is skunks are actually partially blind and can only see what’s right in front of them. Hence the reason so many spray from feeling threatened. They are actually born completely deaf and blind and over time open their eyes.
4. They’re fast.
We mostly notice skunks slowly moving alone, but don’t let that fool, when it comes time to move these creatures can actually reach speeds of up to 10 miles per hour.
5. Their spray isn’t dangerous.
While there’s no getting for the extremely foul odor that comes from a skunk’s spraying, it’s actually not as dangerous or toxic as people think. The rumor that getting in your eyes causing blindness is also false. It is however really hard to get out once it’s released so it’s best to steer clear.
