We know what you’re thinking: Why on earth are we talking about keeping bats around when it’s our job to get rid of them. But hear us out.
Bats, while unwelcome in your home and dangerous for handling, are actually great little creatures to have around. Seriously. Just not inside your home or where they can leave toxic droppings.
For this post we’re talking about the reasons bats should be kept as part of our ecosystem and why you should think again when fear sets in at the thought that Dracula might be living in your attic.
1. Mosquito & Pest Control
One of the top reasons it’s a good thing to have bats around is that they eat insects, lots of them. You know those pesky mosquitos that make hanging around outdoors bothersome in summer or the bugs that wreak havoc on crops. They eat those too.
2. Pollination
Just as birds and bees are critical for pollination of plants and flowers in the environment, these winged critters also help to do the work of pollinating and spreading seeds in some regions. For many, their work is important in terms of reforesting and for keeping the ecosystem growing and thriving.
3. Friendly Neighbors
Let undisturbed and with a home (bat box) set-up for them somewhere distant in your yard, bats can do their work without being a disturbance to your living space. While they’ve gotten a bad rap over the years these creatures can be friendly and go about their business so long as they are left alone.
