In some states, like Ohio and West Virginia, squirrel season has begun. Squirrel season has historically been one of the most popular hunting seasons of the year. While squirrel hunting may not be as popular as it used to be, many hunters will be out until the end of January looking for squirrels.
The popularity and rules for squirrel hunting can vary between states. Back in 1960, there were a reported 150,000 squirrel hunters in Iowa alone. Those hunters were harvesting over a million squirrels each year! Last year only around 21,000 squirrel hunters took part in the hunting season, bringing in about 150,000 squirrels. In Ohio, up to six squirrels can be taken each day before sunset by a hunter. There is a one week break from December 2-8 where squirrels cannot be hunted because it is the statewide deer gun season.
Before going squirrel hunting in your state, make sure you find out about all the rules and regulations that go along with it. While squirrel hunting might not be as popular as it once was, many states still have thousands of hunters out during squirrel season each year.
