Winter is a popular time for animals in Connecticut to seek shelter in homes. When the weather gets cold and the snow starts to fall many small critters will look for a warm place to escape the elements and this often leads raccoons, squirrels and skunks to the comfortable confines of a home basement, attic or garage. When spring arrives, it’s a good idea to do a thorough inspection of your home and look for signs that animals have taken shelter. At Anderson Wildlife Control we want every Connecticut homeowner to feel safe so we offer some helpful tips for inspecting your home.
Be Safe
Just because skunks, raccoons and squirrels are small doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. When doing an inspection of your home, be cautious. Avoid doing a search at night and also have a friend with you who can watch your back and alert you if a critter is about to pounce from a hiding spot. You should also wear protective clothing including durable work gloves, safety glasses and work boots.
Inside/Outside
The best way to work is to start from the top and work your way down. Check the attic, if you have one, then the top floors and on down until you reach the basement. This way, if there are animals in the house you will be forcing them downward and eventually out of the house. If you scare them upwards they will simply find places to hide on the top floors instead of seeking an escape route. Also, start on the inside of the house and when finished then check the roof, gutters and outside foundation.
Call for Help
If you do come across a raccoon, skunk or squirrel during your inspection, do not attempt to handle the animal on your own. Though these animals are not known for being aggressive or violent, they will defend themselves if threatened and each can be a carrier or rabies. If you spot an animal in your home do your best to corner the critter in a location and contact an animal control expert.
Inspecting your home after winter is highly recommended. During your sweep also keep an eye out for damage done to the home exterior, siding, windows and doors. Check vents, gutters and other areas that can be used by a small animal as an entrance. These areas will have to be repaired and reinforced to prevent squirrels, skunks and raccoons from re-entering your home.
