Wild animals such as squirrels, raccoons, and birds often seek out shelter inside houses, particularly in attics and basements. These areas offer protection from extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and predators.
Wild animals can find small openings to get into a house. They may also chew or scratch their way into homes. Squirrels and raccoons can get through siding, roofing shingles, insulation, and other obstacles to get into attics and basements.
If wild animals are living in your house, you want to get rid of them before they cause major damage. You also need to find and seal off the entry point they used to get in so they and others cannot get into your house in the future.
HOW TO LOCATE ENTRY POINTS
You may be able to find the entry point with a simple inspection of your house. You will need binoculars or a ladder to see areas near the roof. Look at areas along the roof line for holes and chew marks where animals could have gotten into the attic. If you have tree branches near the roof, you can trim them to make it harder for animals to get into the attic.
Go into your attic with a flashlight and look for droppings, chew marks, and nests. Turn off the lights in the attic and look for light shining in through entry points.
Look for any holes in the walls and siding. If you find any, they should be sealed off.
Inspect the areas around the base of your house for cracks and holes in the foundation. Pay particular attention to areas that have shrubs or overgrowth where entry points may not be apparent at first.
Look at places where two parts of the house meet, such as balconies, roof joints, pillars, and gables. Animals often target those areas for nesting sites.
Birds frequently make nests in chimneys. Cap your chimney to keep them out. Look for cracks in the masonry that could serve as entry points.
