Omnipresent, easily recognizable and for the most part harmless, the squirrel is one of the more common critters in Connecticut. There are few towns that don’t have an abundance of these medium-sized rodents or “large rats” as some homeowners have come to calling these animals with the bushy tails and tree climbing expertise.
While squirrels are not an imminent threat to you or your family they can become a nuisance if granted access to your home. Luckily squirrels are not known to carry rabies so your pet dog or cat isn’t in any danger either but squirrels are scavengers and with their active paws and teeth can easily chew through ceilings, floor boards and attics leaving you with costly repairs.
Sizing up squirrels is relatively easy to do. If you’ve spent any amount of time in Connecticut you’ve no doubt seen these ever present creatures scurrying up trees, navigating traffic, romping across telephone and cable wires and leaving behind a trail of empty nut shells and other debris. Usually sporting a grey coat squirrels have slender bodies, large eyes and claws that allow it to cling tightly to trees, roofs, gutters and bird feeders. Squirrels generally subsist on seeds and nuts but will help themselves to anything you have that is out in the open.
Knowing you have a squirrel problem won’t be difficult. Not only are squirrels noisy but they have terrible manners and never clean up after they have rummaged through garbage cans, attics and gutters. Taking a trip up to the attic or the roof will reveal sure signs if squirrels are getting inside since you will see chewed wood, nut shells, scratch marks and small piles of debris.
